Meet Our Adult Lessons Coach

Vilai Vang - vilai@urbantennis.org

Vilai began his journey with SPUT in high school when his tennis coach, Koua Yang, asked him and his teammates if they would be interested in a summer job. Knowing nothing about coaching at the time, he thought it would be an excellent opportunity to play tennis and make money. Since then, Vilai continued developing his coaching skills with SPUT on a part-time basis until taking on the full time position of Eastview Manager, and later becoming our Tennis Director. Vilai is excited to help SPUT's adult tennis community improve their game in 2025!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How to determine the right tennis lesson level for me?

Choosing the right tennis lesson level depends on your current skill and experience. Here's a guide to help you decide:

Beginner: If you're new to tennis or have limited experience, beginner lessons are suitable. You might not be familiar with basic strokes (forehand, backhand, serve), court positioning, or scoring. In our beginner lessons you will learn fundamental techniques, rules, and gain court confidence.

Intermediate: For players with a basic understanding of tennis fundamentals. You can rally, understand scoring, and have some court awareness. In our intermediate lessons you will refine strokes, develop consistency, and work on strategic play.

Advanced: For experienced players with a strong foundation and competitive play background. You have a consistent and powerful game, understand advanced strategies, and may have tournament experience. Our advanced lessons will work on fine-tuning skills, focus on advanced techniques, and enhance match tactics.

Remember: It's okay to start at a lower level and progress. Advancing too quickly may hinder skill development. Tailor your choice to where you feel challenged but not overwhelmed.

If you're still unsure, don't hesitate to consult with our tennis director Vilai Vang who can offer personalized recommendations based on your skill level. He can be reached at vilai@urbantennis.org

  • What should I bring to lessons?

We recommend bringing a water bottle and good tennis shoes. It may also be a good idea to wear a hat or some kind of sun protection.

  • Do I need to buy a racket for lessons?

If you would like to buy a racket, feel free to do so. However, SPUT will provide rackets  upon request.

  • Is it okay if I miss a week of lessons?

Yes. Please plan to notify your coach of the absence ahead of time.

  • What is SPUT's Refund Policy?

Saint Paul Urban Tennis is a 501(c)3 non-profit and relies strictly upon grants, donations, and lesson fees to keep our programming accessible to all. With that being said, SPUT will stop processing refunds for lessons after the second week.

  • What is SPUT's Inclement Weather Policy?

Rain: Any rain cancellations will be posted on our Weather Updates page and texted to you via the Remind app.

Heat: If the heat index is predicted to reach 104 degrees, all classes will be canceled for the day. Cancellations will be made the day before if possible and posted on the Remind app.

Lightning: If thunderstorms occur during lessons, classes will be postponed, and coaches will guide players to the closest sheltered area. Play will resume if the storm clears and it is no longer raining.

Cold: If the temperature drops below 38 degrees with a poor wind chill and/or conditions (snowing), classes will be canceled, and communications sent via the Remind app.
