Reading Program
The SPUT Summer Reading Program is a pilot program that started in 2009. We now have ten selected sites. The program was exposed to more that 850 kids.
The SPUT Reading/Tennis instructors work 2 sites - rotating weekly one site for MWF and TTH the next week. The Reading/Tennis instructors work the first class then following the class bring any interested players to a selected reading site for 1/2 hour of reading/reading activities. When the reading is completed the Reading/Tennis instructors jump into the next tennis class to help with the last 1/2 hour and then again take the players over for reading, etc.
With the encouragement of the other Tennis instructors and the Reading/Tennis instructor, the hope is that the players will get to know the instructors, have fun and join in the reading. The Reading/Tennis instructors will be handing out stickers during the tennis lessons for relays, good form, working hard, etc.
The players are offered a snack as they start and when they finish.
Books are passed out (5 copies - per book - per site) and the players are asked to share books and take turns reading out loud. Some of the players would rather listen - that is fine! Word and alphabet games are also played.
SPUT was fortunate and is thankful that Lerner Publishing donated more than 800 books for this pilot program.
