Before there was a Saint Paul Urban Tennis program, there was Ernie Greene, teaching tennis to inner-city kids in St. Paul - mostly for free. Ernie later became an instrumental calayst to the growth of the SPUT program and was involved as a coach, coordinator, community advocate, and finally a board member until his death in 2002. In his honor, this scholarship was created to award young people who embody the spirit of Ernie in their strong work ethic, academic proficiency, and good citizenship. Proficiency in tennis for the award is a bonus, which is just the way Ernie would have wanted. Click here for an application. Deadline is July 21, 2017.
Saint Paul Urban Tennis established the Schun-Shine Rookie Coach of the Year Award to honor the late Chris Schunicht, a courageous survivor of childhood cancer who passed due to heart transplant-related illness at the young age of 26. Although he was only able to work for the SPUT program a short time, he made a significant impact, spreading "schun-shine" to all he came in contact with. He inspired many with his commitment to living life to its fullest through a dedication to good health, friendships and exploring the planet. In his memory, this award recognizes new coaches to the program that make a significant impact on those around them, especially the kids!
